Twelve short answers before you pick up the phone
Licensing in a state that has none, what the visit costs, the red cord, the post-storm opener, permits inside and outside Austin, and why August is spring season.
Are the technicians licensed?
Texas doesn't issue a garage door licence, so nobody in Austin holds one. The only state rule that touches the trade is from DPS, which licenses alarm and access-control work: an installer who fits only a garage door opener and its remotes needs no DPS licence unless the opener is wired into an alarm or records who enters. The useful question is about insurance. Ask the technician who arrives what they carry and ask to see the certificate; they expect it.
How quickly can someone be here?
A door that won't open or won't close is a same-day visit in nearly every case. A trapped car, a door stuck open, or a snapped spring with a storm coming gets the next available technician, nights and weekends included. Noisy, slow or cosmetic problems are usually seen the next day.
Is there a charge for coming out?
A trip and diagnosis charge of $85 to $135 is quoted when you book and credited against the repair if you go ahead. Quotes for a new door or a new opener carry no charge.
What does a broken spring cost?
A matched pair of torsion springs runs $340 to $580 installed in the Austin area in 2026, more for high-cycle springs on a door that opens eight or ten times a day. Replacing a single spring is possible but not recommended; the other one has the same cycles on it.
The door banged and now it's too heavy. Can I pull the red cord and lift it?
Please don't. The bang was the spring, and without it the door is 150 to 250 pounds of dead weight hanging on two cables. Pulling the release with the door up lets it fall; lifting it by hand with the spring gone is how backs and fingers get hurt. Leave it, keep the car where it is if you can, and call.
Why does the opener do nothing after a thunderstorm?
A surge through the house wiring or the low-voltage sensor wires takes out the logic board. It's the single most common opener failure in Central Texas, and the first big storm after a dry spell brings a run of them. A board swap costs $160 to $360 depending on the model; on an opener older than about fifteen years, or one without safety sensors, a new unit with battery backup is often the better spend.
Do I need a permit for a garage door in Austin?
For replacing or installing an overhead garage door on a one- or two-family home or a townhouse up to three stories inside the City of Austin, the City's Development Services department lists the work as exempt from a building permit. Repairs and opener installs aren't on the list either way, so if you want certainty, ask the City. Outside the city limits, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown and the rest set their own rules; ask that building department.
Can the opener be plugged into an extension cord?
Openers want a grounded outlet within reach of the cord. If the ceiling has no outlet, a new hard-wired one is electrical work for a licensed electrician, not the door technician. We'll say so rather than run a cord across the ceiling.
Do you work on LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie openers?
Yes, those three run most Austin garages, and parts for them ride on the truck: gear kits, capacitors, logic boards, photo-eyes, remotes and keypads. Craftsman, Linear, Marantec, Overhead Door and the older brands are fine too; some parts take a day. We aren't affiliated with any manufacturer.
Can one dented panel be replaced?
Often, if the manufacturer still makes that section in that profile and colour. The technician identifies the door from the stamp on the end stile and checks availability. When the section is discontinued, or two or more sections are damaged, a new door is usually cheaper than chasing parts, and you'll hear both numbers.
Why do garage doors in Austin fail in summer?
Three reasons that stack. The garage holds 110 to 120 degrees under a west-facing roof, which thins opener grease and cooks capacitors. Limestone dust from construction and the road cuts works into rollers and bearings and turns lubricant to paste. And people cycle the door more in summer, so a spring that was near its ten-thousand-cycle rating finds it in August.
Is the line really picked up at night?
Yes, any hour, every day. The person who answers takes the symptoms, your address and your number, and a technician calls back to set the time, the same day for a door that won't open or close. If a car is trapped or the door is stuck open, say so first.
